Scout Group

Milnsbridge is a district of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire situated in the Colne Valley. The Huddersfield narrow canal at the side of the river goes through Milnsbridge and also the main railway line to Manchester crosses the viaduct at Milnsbridge. An area once dominated by the woollen industry, most of the mills have now been demolished or converted for other uses.

Milnsbridge Baptist Scouts were formed in 1919 and the group is the oldest in Huddersfield.

The most famous of our ex scouts was former prime

minister and leader of the labour party Harold Wilson. He was born at Cowlersley (very near Milnsbridge) and was a Scout at the group from 1927 - 1931. He later became Lord Wilson of Rievaulx.
When the Scout group were formed they met at the Milnsbridge Baptist chapel. In 1965 they moved to their first hut on Armitage Road and Lord Wilson came to officially open it. The hut burnt down in 1973 so the Scouts went back to meeting at the baptist chapel. When the current
headquarters on Pickford Street was built in 1982 Lord Wilson also came to officially open it.

The group is open to both boys and girls aged 6 - 14.  To contact Milnsbridge Scout Group  please email   milnsbridgescouts @ tiscali.co.uk (you will need to type in this email address without spaces. This is to cut down on spam emails which the site has been receiving)
